Head Shot of ISP Client Rick

Rick

World Record Holder in Olympic Lifting

Needs:

  • Was less than 2 weeks away from a qualifying competition to be eligible to compete in the World Championships
  • He was unable to get the barbell overhead, and was experiencing intense cramping in his lower leg (calf) when attempting the overhead pressing part of his lift
  • His usual therapy methods of addressing lifting issues weren’t working, and he was considering not competing in his upcoming competition

Summary

Rick first heard about MAT from a fellow Olympic lifting competitor who he was coaching. He was hoping that a different approach could possibly help his situation – he didn’t have time to spare or any other options left.

Rick responded quickly to Muscle Activation Techniques and was able to make his competition – and qualify!

Below is a short discussion of the approach taken to address Rick’s issue.

Finding the Root cause

AKA "Unraveling The Onion"

Everyone was focusing on Rick’s calf and lower leg because that is where he ‘felt’ the issue that was contributing to him not being able to finish his lift.

After assessing his lower leg, there were only minor imbalances found and no general weakness. In fact, both calves were quite strong and stable!

In doing an assessment of the entire body, it was obvious that he had imbalances and weaknesses all on ONE side of his core.

After applying Muscle Activation Techniques (MAT) to his core to activate and balance his muscles, his calf cramping was immediately gone.

Rick ended up competing the following week after his treatment – and QUALIFIED!!

Every other therapist had been addressing the ‘symptom’ of his issue. It wasn’t until the ‘onion was unraveled’ with MAT that the root cause was revealed.

Maintaining Results and anticipating future issues

What It Means To Train For Constant Evolution...

After his competition, Rick continued to train with True Core to help anticipate and address any future muscular imbalances using MAT. He also adjusted his training and exercise selections based on our recommendations.

Rick also incorporated many of our recommendations into the training recommendations that he gave to the other lifters he coached.

He went on to have a successful season and was inducted into the New York State Strength and Power Hall of Fame in the same year.
